Overview

Upwork is the largest general-purpose freelance marketplace in the world. You post a job, freelancers from anywhere submit proposals, and you sort through them yourself. It is an open marketplace, which means enormous choice and almost no filtering.

RemoteGenies is a smaller, deliberately narrower platform. We work only with Filipino talent, every Genie is screened before they can take work, a coordinator is assigned to every task, and you only pay for hours you have approved.

The difference is not really about price. It is about who does the work of hiring. On Upwork, that work is yours. On RemoteGenies, we have already done most of it before you arrive.

Where Upwork wins: scale, global talent, enterprise tooling, and a proven track record over more than a decade.

Where RemoteGenies wins: speed to a good hire, no screening burden, someone accountable for delivery, and a payment model with no surprises.

Quick verdict

Choose Upwork if you want the widest possible talent pool, you need people outside the Philippines, you are comfortable reviewing dozens of proposals, and you have the time and judgement to run your own screening process.

Choose RemoteGenies if you want a short list of pre-screened Filipino specialists, you would rather not manage a freelancer alone, and you want to pay only for approved hours with no contract-initiation charges.

If you have hired successfully on Upwork before and enjoy the process, stay there. If you have tried and given up after sifting through eighty proposals, that is the exact problem RemoteGenies is built for.

What Upwork costs a client

Upwork charges clients on the Basic plan a 5% marketplace fee on all payments made to freelancers, or 3% for eligible U.S. clients paying from a checking account. Business Plus clients pay 10%, or 8% with the same eligible payment method. (Upwork client pricing)

On top of that, Upwork charges a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99 each time you start a new contract with a freelancer. For fixed-price work it appears when you fund the first milestone; for hourly work, on your first payment.

There is also a fee your freelancer pays that you never see directly. As of May 2025, Upwork charges freelancers a variable service fee between 0% and 15% per contract, set when the proposal is sent and fixed for the life of that contract. Most 2026 analyses put the typical rate around 10%. That cost does not disappear. Experienced freelancers price it into the rate they quote you.

What RemoteGenies costs a client

RemoteGenies prices by Genie tier, not by a single flat rate:

Tier
Experience
Hourly rate
Entry
0 to 2 years
$6.50
Advanced
3 to 5 years
$8.50
Top-Tier
6 to 7 years
$10.00
Top-Tier
7 to 12 years
$15.00
Top-Tier
13+ years
$20.00

Pay-as-you-go and Advanced plans cover Genies up to the $10.00 band. The $15.00 and $20.00 bands need a Top-Tier plan. (Credit deduction rates)

You buy credits up front and they are drawn down at your Genie's rate as they track time. Nothing is added at checkout: no marketplace fee, no transaction fee, no subscription requirement. Pay-as-you-go packages run $99 to $999 and those credits expire after 30 days, though topping up resets the expiry on your whole balance. Monthly plans ($100 to $2,400) roll credits over for 4 months; yearly plans roll over for 6 and cost around 20% less than monthly. (RemoteGenies pricing)

New accounts get $20 in free credits, usable across all experience levels and spent before any paid credits. They expire 30 days from the date you claim them, with no extension or rollover. (Free credits)

One detail worth knowing if open-ended hourly billing makes you nervous: a Genie may request a maximum of one additional hour per task, and only with your approval. If you decline, the task has to be finished in the hours originally agreed. (Client × Freelancer Contract 3.3)

RemoteGenies takes a 30% service fee from each completed task and the Genie receives 70%. (Legal Center)That take rate is higher than Upwork's and we are not going to bury it. What it pays for is the screening, the matching, and a Project Coordinator on every task, which are things Upwork's marketplace fee does not cover. Whether that is worth it is exactly the judgement this page is meant to help you make.

A worked example

Say you need 40 hours of work.
On Upwork, hiring a freelancer at $12/hour (Basic plan, card payment):

• Freelancer's rate: $480
• 5% marketplace fee: $24
• Contract initiation fee: up to $14.99
Your total: roughly $505 to $519
The freelancer receives roughly $408 to $480, depending on their contract's service fee rate

On RemoteGenies, the total depends on which tier the work needs:

• Entry Genie, 40 hours at $6.50: $260
• Advanced Genie, 40 hours at $8.50: $340
• Top-Tier Genie, 40 hours at $10.00: $400 (more experienced Top-Tier Genies run $15.00 or $20.00/hour and need a Top-Tier plan)
• Marketplace fee: none. Contract initiation fee: none
• At the Advanced rate, the Genie receives $238 (70%)

Two things are true at once here, and both matter.

The client pays less on RemoteGenies across every tier in this example, because our rate is all-in and Upwork's is not. Freelancer rates on Upwork vary enormously, so pick a rate that matches what you would actually be quoted before treating this as decisive.

The person doing the work takes home more on Upwork. Our 30% is the highest take rate of the three platforms we compare in detail. If that matters to you as a buyer, and for some people it does, it belongs in your decision.

What neither column shows is the time you spend getting to a good hire, and what a failed hire costs you. Those are the numbers this whole comparison actually turns on.

Upwork's other costs

• Connects, the credits freelancers spend to apply to your job, cost $0.15 each. This does not hit your invoice, but it shapes who applies. Freelancers ration their applications.
• Freelancer Plus, an optional membership, costs $19.99/month. (Upwork)
• Currency conversion on international payments carries a spread that is not itemised.

Hiring process

Upwork: Write a job post. Wait for proposals, which can number in the dozens or hundreds for common roles. Read them. Shortlist. Interview. Check portfolios and work histories. Negotiate rate. Send an offer. Set up the contract. Onboard the person yourself.

Realistically that is several hours of your time, spread over days, and the quality of the outcome depends almost entirely on how good you are at reading proposals.

RemoteGenies: Post the task, or reply to us with your to-do list and we will write the task brief for you. We match you with screened Genies who already do that kind of work. A coordinator is assigned. Work starts.

The design goal is that you make one decision, not forty.

Vetting

This is the largest single difference between the two platforms, and it is worth being precise about it.

Upwork does not vet freelancers on its standard marketplace. Anyone can create a profile, describe their own skills, and start bidding. Upwork provides the signals you would use to judge for yourself: work history, job success score, client reviews, and optional skill badges. Screening exists on Upwork, but it lives in the paid Talent Scout and Enterprise products, not in the marketplace most small businesses use.

That is a legitimate design choice. An open marketplace maximises supply, and experienced hirers can navigate it well.

It also means the screening work still has to happen. It just happens on your desk.

RemoteGenies screens before anyone is listed: screening and skills assessments verifying skill, experience, communication ability and reliability before onboarding. RemoteGenies states its Genies are the top 20% of more than 30,000 applicants. Genies who fail screening do not appear in your matches at all.

Freelancer quality

Neither platform can honestly promise every hire will be excellent, and any comparison page that claims otherwise is selling you something.

What differs is the shape of the distribution. On an open marketplace with millions of profiles, the range runs from world-class to unqualified, and finding the top end is a skill. On a screened marketplace the ceiling may be lower than the very best freelancer on Upwork, but the floor is considerably higher.

If you are hiring a senior specialist for a critical project and you know how to evaluate one, Upwork's depth is a real advantage. If you are hiring for ongoing operational work and your main risk is landing on a bad hire, a screened pool is the safer structure.

Filipino talent

Upwork has a very large number of Filipino freelancers, and they are among its most active user groups. You can filter by location and find excellent people.

What you cannot do on Upwork is get help judging them. Assessing English fluency, time zone reliability, and whether someone's portfolio is genuinely theirs is difficult across a written proposal and a video call, particularly if you have not hired from the Philippines before.

RemoteGenies works only with Filipino talent. That narrows your options and it is a genuine limitation. If you need a developer in Poland or a copywriter in the UK, we are the wrong platform and Upwork is the right one. What the focus buys is depth: we know this talent market, we screen in it constantly, and our coordinators are in the same time zone as the people doing your work.

Matching and AI

Upwork has invested heavily in AI matching and surfaces recommended freelancers on job posts. It also offers an AI assistant to clients and freelancers. The matching operates over an unscreened pool, so it optimises for relevance rather than quality.

RemoteGenies matches from a screened pool and adds a human coordinator who reviews the match. Posted tasks are routed automatically to pre-vetted Genies with the right skills, up to five of whom submit bids. Most clients are matched within 24 hours.

The distinction worth understanding: algorithmic matching on an open marketplace is a search problem. Matching on a curated marketplace is a shortlist problem. They feel very different to use.

Project management

Upwork provides messaging, a work diary with screenshots for hourly contracts, time tracking, milestone management, and contract records. The tooling is mature and well built. What it does not provide is a person. If a freelancer goes quiet on Thursday, that is your problem to solve.

RemoteGenies assigns a coordinator to every task. A dedicated Project Coordinator is assigned to every task, on every plan including pay-as-you-go. Support hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm Philippine time. The coordinator's job is to keep the task moving, chase what needs chasing, and be the person you contact when something is off.

This is the pillar we would ask you to weigh most carefully, because it is the one that changes your workload rather than your invoice. If you already manage contractors well and have systems for it, Upwork's tooling is sufficient and you will not miss a coordinator. If freelance management is the part you dread, it is the entire reason RemoteGenies exists.

Communication

Both platforms keep communication on-platform by default, with messaging, file sharing and video calls.

Upwork's terms restrict taking a working relationship off-platform to avoid fees, and it enforces this. Read the terms before agreeing to any arrangement a freelancer proposes outside Upwork.

RemoteGenies communication runs through the platform with your coordinator included, so there is a record and a second person who knows the context. Work that originates on RemoteGenies must stay on the platform for two years, per the platform terms

Upwork's fee structure is transparent in the sense that every fee is documented. It is not simple. There are at least six separate line items across both sides of a transaction, and the 2025 change to the freelancer service fee means a lot of the advice online is out of date.

The approved-hours model on RemoteGenies is deliberately narrow: hours you have looked at and approved are the only thing that generates a charge.

Security and protection

Upwork offers payment protection on both hourly and fixed-price contracts, escrow for milestones, a dispute process, identity verification for freelancers who opt in, and an established trust and safety operation. For a platform of its size, this is well developed.

Upwork's known weak points, based on user reports, centre on account suspensions, difficulty reaching support, and the burden of proof in disputes falling on the party with better documentation.

RemoteGenies: RemoteGenies runs a dispute resolution process in which the support team mediates between client and Genie, and your Project Coordinator steps in before a task closes if something is off. If a Genie stops responding or the work is not delivered, escrow funds can be refunded or the task reassigned to a different Genie. (Platform policies) Escrow removes the most common category of dispute before it happens, because payment does not trigger until you have reviewed the work.

What users say

Treat this section as sentiment, not fact. Review platforms attract people with strong experiences in either direction, and freelancers review these platforms far more often than clients do.

Upwork holds a 4-star rating on Trustpilot from roughly 14,700 reviews as of August 2026. Positive reviews commonly cite the structured hiring process, escrow, and contract management tooling. Critical reviews commonly cite the cost of Connects, difficulty getting visibility, and the volume of low-intent job posts. Most Upwork reviews on Trustpilot are written by freelancers rather than clients, which is worth keeping in mind when reading them.

RemoteGenies: 4.9 on G2, and a member of the NVIDIA Inception and AWS Startups programs. We are new enough that our review volume is small, and we would rather say that plainly than pad the page.

Frequently asked questions

Is RemoteGenies cheaper than Upwork?
It depends on the rate you would have paid on Upwork. Our rates run $6.50 to $20.00 per hour depending on Genie tier, and they are all-in: no marketplace fee, no contract initiation fee. Upwork's headline rate is not all-in. Compare total cost for the same work rather than comparing our hourly rate to a freelancer's quoted rate.
What is RemoteGenies' platform fee?
We take 30% of each completed task and the Genie receives 70%. That is higher than Upwork's freelancer service fee, and it covers the screening, matching and Project Coordinator that Upwork's marketplace fee does not include.
Can I hire non-Filipino talent on RemoteGenies?
No. We work only with Filipino talent. If you need someone elsewhere, Upwork is the better platform for that job.
What does Upwork actually charge clients in 2026?
A 3% to 5% marketplace fee on the Basic plan, 8% to 10% on Business Plus, plus a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99 per new contract. (Upwork client pricing)
Does Upwork vet freelancers?
Not on the standard marketplace. Screening is available through Upwork's paid Talent Scout and Enterprise offerings.
What happens if my Genie isn't working out?
You have a 7-day review window from task completion and your Project Coordinator steps in before the task closes. If the work is not delivered at all, escrow can be refunded or the task reassigned to another Genie.
Do I pay if I'm not happy with the work?
Funds sit in escrow and are only released once you approve the work. You have a 7-day review window, and your Project Coordinator steps in if there is a problem before the task closes.
Can I get a refund on unused credits?
Generally not. Purchases are final, though RemoteGenies may refund at its discretion. Credits also expire: 30 days for pay-as-you-go, 4 months on a monthly plan, 6 months on a yearly one. Topping up a pay-as-you-go balance resets the 30-day clock on everything you hold, so the money is not as easy to lose as it first looks. (Refund policy)
What happens if my Genie goes quiet or the work isn't delivered?
Report it to support. Escrow funds can be refunded, or the task reassigned to a different Genie. (Platform policies)
Can I hire a Genie directly, off the platform?
There is a route: with our written consent, a direct hire is permitted on payment of a $3,000 per-Genie buyout fee. Without consent, the two-year exclusivity applies. If converting someone to a direct hire is the plan, budget for it before you start.
Can I use both?
Yes, and plenty of businesses do. Upwork for specialist one-offs and non-Philippine talent, RemoteGenies for ongoing operational work.
What is GenieScholar?
For every 200 hours worked on RemoteGenies, GenieScholar funds one Filipino child's education for a full school year.
Final verdict

Upwork is the better platform if you want maximum choice and you are willing to do the filtering. It is a mature product with real infrastructure behind it, and for experienced hirers with global needs it is hard to beat.

RemoteGenies is the better platform if the filtering is precisely the part you want to hand off. We are smaller, we are Philippines-only, and we have less history. What we offer instead is that the screening is done, someone is accountable for your task, and you never pay for an hour you have not approved.
