Upwork: Write a job post. Wait for proposals, which can number in the dozens or hundreds for common roles. Read them. Shortlist. Interview. Check portfolios and work histories. Negotiate rate. Send an offer. Set up the contract. Onboard the person yourself.

Realistically that is several hours of your time, spread over days, and the quality of the outcome depends almost entirely on how good you are at reading proposals.

This is the largest single difference between the two platforms, and it is worth being precise about it.

Upwork does not vet freelancers on its standard marketplace. Anyone can create a profile, describe their own skills, and start bidding. Upwork provides the signals you would use to judge for yourself: work history, job success score, client reviews, and optional skill badges. Screening exists on Upwork, but it lives in the paid Talent Scout and Enterprise products, not in the marketplace most small businesses use.

That is a legitimate design choice. An open marketplace maximises supply, and experienced hirers can navigate it well.

It also means the screening work still has to happen. It just happens on your desk.

RemoteGenies screens before anyone is listed: screening and skills assessments verifying skill, experience, communication ability and reliability before onboarding. RemoteGenies states its Genies are the top 20% of more than 30,000 applicants. Genies who fail screening do not appear in your matches at all.

Neither platform can honestly promise every hire will be excellent, and any comparison page that claims otherwise is selling you something.

What differs is the shape of the distribution. On an open marketplace with millions of profiles, the range runs from world-class to unqualified, and finding the top end is a skill. On a screened marketplace the ceiling may be lower than the very best freelancer on Upwork, but the floor is considerably higher.

If you are hiring a senior specialist for a critical project and you know how to evaluate one, Upwork's depth is a real advantage. If you are hiring for ongoing operational work and your main risk is landing on a bad hire, a screened pool is the safer structure.

Upwork has a very large number of Filipino freelancers, and they are among its most active user groups. You can filter by location and find excellent people.

What you cannot do on Upwork is get help judging them. Assessing English fluency, time zone reliability, and whether someone's portfolio is genuinely theirs is difficult across a written proposal and a video call, particularly if you have not hired from the Philippines before.

RemoteGenies works only with Filipino talent. That narrows your options and it is a genuine limitation. Upwork has invested heavily in AI matching and surfaces recommended freelancers on job posts. It also offers an AI assistant to clients and freelancers. The matching operates over an unscreened pool, so it optimises for relevance rather than quality.

RemoteGenies matches from a screened pool and adds a human coordinator who reviews the match. Posted tasks are routed automatically to pre-vetted Genies with the right skills, up to five of whom submit bids. Most clients are matched within 24 hours.

The distinction worth understanding: algorithmic matching on an open marketplace is a search problem. Matching on a curated marketplace is a shortlist problem. They feel very different to use.

Upwork provides messaging, a work diary with screenshots for hourly contracts, time tracking, milestone management, and contract records. The tooling is mature and well built. What it does not provide is a person. If a freelancer goes quiet on Thursday, that is your problem to solve.

Upwork's fee structure is transparent in the sense that every fee is documented. It is not simple. There are at least six separate line items across both sides of a transaction, and the 2025 change to the freelancer service fee means a lot of the advice online is out of date.

The approved-hours model on RemoteGenies is deliberately narrow: hours you have looked at and approved are the only thing that generates a charge.
